Located in central Alabama, Cottondale is an unincorporated community with a population of about 11,000 people. In the late 1880s, Cottondale was home to several cotton mills. The Knights of Labor, an American labor organization, organized several drives in the community. The community was originally named Kennedale in honor of Joseph Kennedy, a local cotton mill owner. However, in 1876, the named was changed to reflect the great amounts of cotton mills that were present in the community at the time.

Cottondale is also home to a Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. post, providing a pleasant recreational facility for veterans. A popular destination spot around the community is Hold Lock and Dam. The dam is built on the Black Warrior River and is a popular spot to fish and swim.
